  • 1891 & 1901 quick lookup

    Hi all,

Would someone be so kind and look up a family in 1891 and 1901 please. I have the 1881 census and 1911 census. On 1911 it lists Joseph and his wife had 10 children with 9 living and 1 that died. From the two census records i have i count 8 kids, so was wondering if their were any other kids listed on 1891 or 1901 that might have died young or something.

1881 Census living at 24 Queensland Road, Islington, London
Joseph W Alger 26 Timber Porter
    Ann Wife 25
    Rachel A 6
    Joseph H 4
    Robert J 2

For the record Rachel A listed on the birth index as Elger not Alger but she's definately Alger as the baptism is on Ancestry.

1911 Census living at 66 Whistler Street, Drayton Park, Islington, London
    Joseph Alger 54
    Hanah 54 Wife
    Robert 32
    Harry 30
    Dolly??? 22???
    Samuel 18
    Ada 15
    Steven 12

If anyone can add anything to the above this would be great.

    Thanks.

Looking at the 1911 I think the daughter you have as Dolly is actually Polly - the P is the same as in porter. I presume that's Mary in the previous censuses

There are various baptisms but one is Caroline Fanny bapt. St Barnabas Hornsey Rd on 25th May 1884, born Dec 20th 1883.

There is a death registration for Caroline Fanny aged 4 Q/E March 1888 Islington

Are you still missing some children?

          Hi Jackie,

          Thanks for the information.

I put down Dolly with a question mark as i couldn't work out what it said. Thanks for that clarification on that (Although, if Mary why call her Polly?). Having said that, there is a birth for a Mary Elizabeth in Islington for 1889 which would be correct due to Polly being 22 on 1911.

Is it unusual to have 2 girls born with the same middle name like Alice Elizabeth in 1886 and then the next born which was Mary Elizabeth in 1889?

The two i was missing seems to be Alice and Caroline with the latter being the one that died aged 4.

          Thanks Jackie for your help.

Polly was a common nickname for Mary.
With regards to sisters having "communal" names, I have a trio named Ann Eliza, Elizabeth and Eliza. All three stuck to those names, grew up to marry and had children of their own.
