i have a probate document for william palmer, who died 1891 in brunswick, victoria, australia. two children from a previous marriage are mentioned, and they are giving me a headache!
william palmer b.1839 puxton, somerset. son of isaac palmer and hannah groves. at home with parents in 1841 congresbury, and 1851 banwell. i think he is in banwell in 1861, ag lab with wife mary anne b.1840 bridgwater, somerset.
his death cert says he arrived in victoria about 1871, and there is a william of the right age aboard the 'essex' arriving in melbourne in jan 1871, so explains why i can't find him in the 1871 census.
he married mary anne morgan in 1874, with two daughters, nellie adelaide and elizabeth frances.
the probate papers state that mary anne morgan was aware he had two children from a previous marriage, and his sisters knew about them. his death does not mention a previous marriage, but does mention mary and their daughters.
"a boy whose name they believe to be george palmer and a girl whose name they believe to be annie nicholls wife of john nicholls and are both now living and that about 6 years ago they were both residing at number 6 castle st upton slough bucks in london near england or thereabouts but they are not aware of their present whereabouts"
i believe they are referring to upton with chalvey, slough, buckinghamshire.
there is an annie palmer, b.1862 weston super mare there in 1881, a servant in the house of ellen and emily gibbons. this annie married a john nicholls in 1881, eton reg district. there is a tree on ancestry with the date of marriage and place is given as stock poges. i have messaged them to ask if they have a copy of the record. they are found under 'nickolls' in 1891 in upton with chalvey.
there are 2 george palmers in upton with chalvey in 1881, and i can't sort out if either are mine. one is a boarder, the other married with 2 kids 'visiting'.
i can't nail down annie in 1871, or george. with their father in australia, and no idea who their mother is, i assume her to be dead, or else the kids would be with her. i'm just out of ideas.
