  • Dockyard Accident, Portsmouth May 1901

British Newspapers has the story of a dockyard accident in may 1901 in Portsmouth where William Farmer, aged 20 was killed. There is also the story of an inquest into the death of a Stoker , William Farmer, 20 drowned in April 1901 in Portsmouth. Is this the same accident? I think it might be 2 different ones. Does it give any more details about William Farmer, as I think one of them may be one of mine.

    Thanks
    Linda

William Farmer, just passing the dock gates and pushing a milk chariot which was struck by a crane, was 13 yrs old - described as a lad.(May 1901)

    Is this your man?

Thanks Janet. Mine would be the 20 years old one - from Romsey possibly. I think I found him in a naval hostel in 1901 census in Portsmouth, occupation Stoker, that would seem to tie in.

Poor bloke - wonder if I can find more on the incident.

Looks like a report of the accident on 24 apr, but he is named as John Farmer. Hope that is just an error!

Does anyone know if I would be able to access any record of an accident in Portsmouth Dockyard which resulted in the loss of an eye?
I have someone who worked as a shipwright there by 1901 ( b. 1875) and who died in 1956 in that city.
Date of accident is unknown, but I was always told that it happened while he was at work there.

Thank you for reading this Val.

He was Henry BELCHAMBER ......(surname often spelt with double L and possibly with S as final letter)

As it happened within the Dockyard, perhaps I had better see if there is an employment file somewhere....

Thank you for looking for him Val.
