  • Merchant Seamen

My Grandfathers brother HARRY EVERITT born Nottingham 1897 joined the Merchant Navy. This info came from Dad and he thought eventually he went to America.

Harry in on the 1901 census with parents William and Clara. Not on the 1911 so presumed he had joined up by then. Just found on Ancestry new records his name with not much else except date and place of birth.

Did a bit of Googling and found more records on Find my past. It has come up with a CR1 for with
    NAME Harry Everitt
    BIRTH 1897
    PLACE Nottingham
    DIS A NO 725694
    EYES Brown
    HAIR Brown
    COMPLEXION Dark
    DISTINGUISHING MARKS Nil

    Underneath it says

Declaration to be made if occasion arises
I hereby certify that I have not hitherto received a continuous Certificate of Discharge for the following reasons:-

That was typed and nothing added in writing.

Not signed but dated 22/11/13 Canning Place Lpl

Does anyone understand any of this and also does it mean he was discharged in 1913 in Liverpool or has he not been discharged because there is nothing written in the space.

Also can anyone find him in America at all

Sorry it is so long winded but any help would be appreciated
    Lin

      Thanks

I don't have world wide ancestry.

Could you see if he was married or had any children with him.

Don't know that address but his parents moved about quite a lot so am just going to look at an old map of Nottingham.

      Thanks again
      Lin

          Thanks

My Dad is 90 this year and is not in the best of health. He has helped me so much with all my family history and I will print all this off and let him have a read. He will be so excited. He had dementia but seems to recall a lot of the past with a bit of help.

          Any more info much appreciated

            Hi Lin,

The Nottingham address is fir his next of kin, although no names are given.

There are quite a few records for Harry under New York Passenger Lits.

                  Thanks Elaine.

He obviously deserted in 1924 and was in America in 1930.

Just looked on my list of addresses for his parents and they were living in Euston Square in 1930 so that is close enough for Houston St for me.

Harry was born in Mar qtr of 1897 so that death isn't him but thanks anyway.

                        Also found on ancestry.com

US World War 2 Navy Muster List

Harry Everitt, enlisted 9 February 1940 San Francisco
                        Service # 381 31 74, ranking AS

He was on various ships between 30 June 1940 and 10 September 1947.

Unfortunately these are mostly lists, and they show the ships he was on, dates of sailing etc, but no other personal details.

                            Just a little update.

I have been away for a few days so taken longer to reply than usual.

I have shown Dad all the docs and info you found me.

He remembers him coming to visit them while he was still at senior school and he left school 1938/9. Harry gave him 10s ( a lot of money in those days). He can't remember ever seeing him again so presumes he stayed in USA.

So nice to be able to have a nice conversation with him about the past.

                            Thanks again
