    The crown Inn.jpg

This is the Crown Inn in Lymington, Hampshire (subsequently the Monkey House and now the Tollhouse Inn). A friend's great grandfather, Richard Knight, was the publican in 1911 and she is unsure if this photo dates from anywhere close to that time. She has the original, but there are no clues other than what you see. To me it looks earlier than that. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit...that's a bit smaller than I thought it would come out. I'll try to pick a couple of details out and upload them too.

Thanks Edna, I didn't - but there are only old family history photos on there now.

I've looked at a couple of sites like that, but they seem to have mostly studio portraits. Looking at the clothes, do you think it's an Edwardian or Victorian scene ?

I'm sure you didn't Val, but it wouldn't have mattered. It's not a site I use much to be honest, so there wasn't much but a few things I'd previously shared publicly in any case. Ive deleted all but the recent FH stuff now.

I would think those clothes are more Victorian than Edwardian.

I agree, late Victorian and certainly not as late as 1911 unless the women were 30 years behind the fashion. I would say 1885-1895, roughly.

Thanks - I thought late Victorian too. My friend will be disappointed as great grandfather took over the pub after 1901.

If you look in the Costume gallery you'll see examples of these clothes in 1900-1910 section.

I think it's pre 1900 - going by the style of the light coloured dress of the lady sitting down (towards the left of the photo.)

The other female apparel could be anytime 1880 - 1910.
