I suppose this is rather a silly question in a way and I am providing part of the answer in the question, if that makes sense. I am having a good session on Ancestry today (and giving myself a score neck in the process ;) ) anyway if a name appears in a census, but does not appear in the next census, I am assuming that that individual has died? Then how come Ancestry has some deaths listed but not all - is that to big a job, or do they not have all the details to do so? It's not a major issue, I am simple asking out of interest.

female - married
male -> military
male/female - emigrated - check passenger lists
male/female - if in an institution, e.g. prison, workhouse - often recorded just with initials
male/female - name mistranscribed
If you are looking for someone in particular Rob, give us some info and we'll take a look.Elaine

As Elaine points out - there are many reasons why someone may not appear in a census. You can't make the assumption they have died without finding evidence to support it.
In fact - in family history you should never assume anything !Retired professional researcher, and ex- deputy registrar, now based in Worcestershire. Happy to give any help or advice I can ( especially on matters of civil registration) - contact via PM or my website www.chalfontresearch.co.uk

One of my guys was last seen in 1861.
When 1901 census was finally released, he reappeared with a Prussian wife and grown up children who'd been born in Odessa and then Dusseldorf!
The marriage & bps have since been added to familysearch.org

Great grandmother Charlotte is nowhere to be found in 1861, although she was probably in Southampton, where she married in 1865 and raised her family.
I have searched the 1911 census country-wide for a baby born in 1910. He is acknowledged only by '1 child, born alive' on his parents' details, but where is he?
He died in 1912 and I have burial details and seen his gravestone, so should be able to find him in 1911, but...no.
As said, there are many reasons, which makes searching a challenge.

Ooo thank you, mother in law always said there were four, Thomas, Maggie, Annie and Francis. Yes that is the baptism for Frances, sometime you search and miss things. Thank you so much, I know it is a lot to ask but any idea how to trace what happened to the parents or even where the parents were from?Rob

The image of the 1911 shows there were 5 children - 4 still living and one who had died.
I think this is Annie in 1901
There is also a Mary Jane Redfern in the same establishment -
This could be Mary Jane with parents William and Martha in 1891 ..
There is an Ellen Winder shown in that family in 1891, and if you look at the baptism entry for Annie then it looks as if Martha's surname could be Winder.
.. which means this could be the marriage for Martha and William
The marriage certificate (available on the above link) shows the names of the fathers of William and Martha which should help you work back - shout if you need help.Elaine
