  • an unfindable passenger

    Hi,

I have been looking for "Henry Bird", who arrived, probably in 1854, in Australia. Probably Melbourne. His year of arrival is 90% certain, but 1853 or 1855 are perhaps also possible. He was born in 1799.
I checked Ancestry as well as PROV (a site of Victoria, Australia), but couldn't locate him.
    Can anybody help me herewith?

    thanks a lot,
    Hans

        Hi,

He left somewhere in England. Lived in London. Don't know more...
He was at last by 1855 in Australia.

          Have you looked on Trove?

Australia’s free online research portal. Trove is a collaboration between the National Library of Australia and hundreds of Partner organisations around Australia.

If you do advanced search there are a few newspaper shipping articles which may be right plus other news items

I found this http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...indiv=1&ml_rpo but since I don't know where Henry was born or lived I can't be sure.

most shipping records pre 1855 don't exist anymore. the assisted passenger lists are in theory existing from 1839 i think it is in victoria. i just have a few ancestors arriving in the early 1850's, and older family members could tell you the ship they came on, but the lists havn't survived. if you can narrow down th eship, trove may have an announcement of it, they usually list the surnames of the people arriving. so maybe look for a mr bird arriving in between 1850-1855.

also do you have a marriage or death for him? this would give birthplace, which may enable him to be found in census.

                        Hi,

Could you tell me how you found him on ancestry? I can't open the link (have access to a library edition).
Are there censuses for Australia? He was born in Bristol in 1799.

                          Henry Bird
                          Vessel: Asia
                          Convicted Date: 4 Mar 1840
                          Voyage Date: 25 Apr 1840

                          Convicted at: Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England

Born Bristol so could be correct. Why do you think 1853 transportation. Do you have him on a UK census ?

                              Hi,

Henry Bird was in the census of 1851 (London), and there are various other proofs of his staying in London.

If Kat's census for 1851 is correct (17), there were three people named Bird (no other names) travelling to Melbourne in 1853. They left from Liverpool in 1853 on the Indian Queen. Nationality English.

Or could be one person recorded x 3

                                        Hi,

                                        These censuses are correct.
I can't follow the direct ancestry link, Vera. Can you tell me how you found it? Which database?
