  • Widowed men and their wife who died

My great grandfather, Robert French, married my great grandmother, Sarah Ann Taylor in November 1877 in st. Thomas Church, Birmingham. Their marriage certificate shows that he was a widower. Is there any way of discovering who his previous wife was and how she died

Do you have Robert on 1881 or other census? we need a place of birth for him and an age if possible

Yes, you can look for him in 1871 census to see if he is with another wife. You can check him and new wife in 1881 to see if he brought children to the marriage that way you can be sure you have found the right one by checking the children are in the household with him and previous wife.

From the previous thread it appears that the poster already has a name and possible first marriage for Robert French so the best thing to do is get that marriage certificate and see if the groom's father's name is James to prove the matter.

I am so sorry, It was a typing error, as Robert French and sarah Ann French were married in 1873. The 1851 census shows Robert living with his parents in Northamptonshire, and the 1871 census shows him living with his aunt and uncle in Birmingham. The marriage certificate of Robert and Sarah Ann shows him as of full age and Widowed. Her age is also shown as Full and she was a spinster. Robert was born in 1840 so he would have been 33. Sarah ann was born in 1849 and she would have been just short of her 24th birthday at the time of her wedding. I am assuming that Robert would have married for the first time some time after his 20th birthday, and he must have died prior to when he was living with his aunt in 1871. Thank you all for information provided. I should also have said that Robert died on 8th June 1880 aged 40. He was buried in a public grave in Warstone Lane cemetery in Birmingham, just down the road from his pub.I cannot understand why a public grave as he left somewhere in the region of £450

                              Hello Nodrogw
I have just discovered this forum and realize your post is fairly old but I have also been researching this FRENCH family. I am the gr-gr granddaughter of Joseph SHELDON and Mary FRENCH, the aunt and uncle that Robert was with in the 1871 census. I have discovered a little more information about Robert's first wife Naomi as well as his parents and grandparents, so here's hoping you see this post.
