  • Welsh WW1 website goes live

    From the WDYTYA magazine website:

Marking 100 years since the conflict began, The Welsh Experience of the First World War offers free online access to thousands of letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs

Thousands of records relating to Wales during the First World War are now available to explore through a new online resource.

The Welsh Experience of the First World War (cymru1914.org) brings together a wide variety of primary sources held at universities, archives and record offices across the country – many available on the web for the first time.

Developed by the National Library of Wales, the resource was created following a £500,000 grant from JISC and partnerships with institutions including Aberystwyth University and the People’s Collection Wales.
As well as details of soldiers serving on the front line, researchers can use the material to learn about the impact of the conflict on family members at home.

By typing in a name or keyword, the site brings up a list of relevant results, which can then be filtered by record type, date and subject.

In addition to letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, the website hosts sound clips which can be streamed directly through the site. Drawn from the oral history collection at the South Wales Miners’ Library, the recordings feature veterans talking about their memories of the war.

BBC Cymru Wales has also supplied more than 500 minutes of audio and visual material for the project, although this is yet to appear online.

Appearing at a launch event in Merthyr Tydfil last month, Education and Skills Minister Huw Lewis said: “Digital resources can unlock our past for a variety of audiences, in Wales and around the world.”
“This very special digital archive will be widely used for education and research purposes, especially as we approach the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

“The archive will contribute greatly to the First World War commemorations in Wales by providing a comprehensive online facility for all sectors of education, local and family history researchers.”

While the site currently contains more than 220,000 records, the National Library of Wales intends to continue adding items throughout the First World War centenary (2014-2018) and beyond.
