  • Drake/Cracknell families Herts

    Hi,
I am looking for some family details for a Daniel Drake, born (supposedly) about 1782 in Sawbridgeworth, and married in 1805 to Sarah Cracknell. She was born about 1783 but not necessarily in Sawbridgeworth. Daniel and Sarah had four children born in England (again, I don't know if they were born in Sawbridgeworth). Daniel was transported to Australia in 1814, with Sarah and the children following in 1815. Unfortunately, two of the children died on the voyage.
Sorry for the vagueness of this information, it's all I have.
    Regards,
    Jennifer

    Hi, Jennifer -
    Welcome to FTF!

I wonder if this would catch the eye of more people if this were in the Research Advice/Family History Research section? A moderator can move it for you. This section is usually used if you have a specific record you need someone local to the record's location to go look it up.

    Best wishes,
    Sarah

As Sarah has suggested, this may be better off in our Research forum where hopefully more people will see it. Will move it over for you.

A Daniel DRAKE, son of George and Mary was baptised in Sawbridgeworth on 29th February 1784 according to the transcribed records on Find My Past.
FamilySearch has that baptism, also baptisms of Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah, children of Daniel and Sarah in Sawbridgeworth, between 1805 and and 1812.
A submitted record on Family Search has the marriage of Daniel DRAKE and Sarah CRACKNELL in St Andrew's, Enfield, 11 March 1804 which is possible as Enfield is not too far from Sawbridgeworth.
Update - that marriage does also appear on the transcribed records in FamilySearch.

Jennifer, not sure if you have any details of the reason for transportation - but have found this article in the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal dated March 19, 1813 - which could relate to your man.

At Hertford, Thomas Adams, for horse stealing; James Blackaby, George Smith, and Dan. Drake for sheep stealing; John Chapman and Elijah Stead, for stealing muslin; and Edward Roone, for a burglary, received sentence of death. Smith and Roone are left for execution; the remainder are reprieved. James Jackson, for stealing wearing apparel; Wm. George, for stealing from a dwelling house a silver spoon, to be transported for seven years.
These names seem to match the image against the following entry on Ancestry:

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892
            Name - Danl Drake
Date of Trial - Lent 1813
            Location of Trial: Hertfordshire
            Sentence - Death

Looking on the HALS (Herts Library & Archive Service) online database, there are several DRAKEs from Sawbridgeworth who run foul of teh law - but none of the records seems to be early enough for yours - and none is a Daniel.

The same database has a ref to this marriage:
George Drake Mary Tisley Sawbridgeworth 17 Feb 1771
There may be images on FMP for that - they do have Sawbridgeworth records - yes that marriage record is there, and it should be "Seventh Day of Feby 1771" not "17th". They're described as both of the parish, and both "made their mark" rather than "signed".

That baptism image is there, too, but, being so early on, there is no more info than: date, child's name, parents' names.
