in New York in 1848 would they have to go through Ellis Island does anyone know
I am trying to tie down where Charles LYDALL was, I have him in all census except 1850 [I presume that he will be in USA as he arrived in NY as this is the year he gives on the census]
in 1860 he is in Connecticut USA with his wife Margaret and children, I have tried looking but cannot spot him at all in the census there, interestingly enough, I have found a typed piece of info from the Hale Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspapers, that gives his death/burial but also says Civil War marker, [whatever that means!] I know his brother Henry was in the Civil war, but this is a new piece of info for me.
any pointers would be most gratefully received thanks
