  • Ship collides with Brisbane Bridge - July 1948

    Can you help?

I am researching my fathers time spent in the Merchant Navy. He remembers clearly an incident involving the ship he was sailing on the S.S. 'Corabank' when approaching Brisbane Harbour. The ship collided with a bridge, causing substantial damage to the front mast.

Interested to know if anything was reported in local newspapers of the incident, and would be very grateful for a digital copy of the article if one insists. According to the ships voyage records held at the Guildhall Library, London the 'Corabank' arrived at Brisbane on the 28 July 1948 and sailed on the 6 August 1948 for Sydney.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Can't see anything Chris. Lots of articles on the Corabank. She was refused her load in Townsville of that year due to the strike.

Brissie does not have a harbour only the river and I don't think she would have gone as far up the river as the bridge.
