I thought I would share this with you. I am lucky enough to have just visited Salt Lake City. So naturally I had to visit the Family History Library of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (familysearch.org)
The Library covers five floors. The British Isles collection is at the basement 2 level. The research room is much the same as you would find in most county archives: desks, computers, microfilm readers, row upon row of microfilm cabinets, maps, and a very large collection of books divided into counties. I was very impressed by the wide range of books, directories, etc., they had on Essex which I specialise in. Not as large as the Essex Record Office, but nevertheless, very impressive.
They were very welcoming and helpful. All first time visitors are shown a brief film about researching your family tree, the library, and their storage facility deep under the Rocky Mountains. Afterwards I was given a guided tour. Others in our coach party were given one-to-one help on researching their family tree, but some didn't get very far because of no immediate access to the civil registration certificates.
A most interesting time with no suggestion of them trying to push their particular brand of Christianity.
