  • 1600's script

    Hi all

I have found an ancestor's birth & burial records in 1639-40.

I can read the word for 'daughter' but I can't make out what it reads for son. It doesn't seem to begin with an s as it seems different to a capital S. Could it be the word 'sonne'??

It looks to me like it may begin in a P......

Anyone any experience of script in those times?

    Thank you

    Amanda

Any chance you could post the relevant part of the image?

That makes sense - errrrrrr, I'll have a go later, not too good at that though.

familysearch has handwriting guides. In the middle of this page, Language Resources title, then English subtitle there are several headers that may assist.

The word "sonne" is commonly found that long ago and it means "son".

As there have only ever been two sexes, then if it doesn't read daughter, it must have been a son, lol.

Thanks for your help all - I'll look at the links tomorrow.
I may try and take a snap of the enlarged document and post it.

I'm a dolt - it is, of course, 'sonne' or son.

                      Thank you
