  • Query about London property

    Hi

If I wanted to find out who owned a certain London property in the late 1950's - who was paying the rates and whether it was bought or sold at that time - where would I have to enquire?

    Many thanks

Good thinking. I have the address which was a business, but it had rooms above it. Could give some helpful clues.

      Thank you so much.

The electoral roll does not tell you who owned a property - just who lived there - who may or may not be owners. In particular a flat above a shop is most often rented especially in the London area.

Rates are paid by the occupier whether they are owners or tenants.

To find out who owns land or property in the UK you need to consult the Land Registry - http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public. If a property is registered you need to buy the Title deed to see who owns it but you are unlikely to see historical data if it has changed hands several times and more recently than the dates you are interested in.
