Arthur MacDonald from his BC
Birth 3 Feb 1887 41 Langton Street, Chelsea
Father John MacDonald, Coachman, Mother Annie MacDonald formerly Price (signed X her mark)
In 1891 RG12 Piece 53, Folio 79, Page 15
John McDonald, Head, M, 33, Bus Driver, Stratford
Annie McDonald, Wife, M, 36, London Old Ford
10 children including:-
Arthur McDonald, Son, 3, London, Fulham
Cannot find them in 1881
1878 London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
John McDonald, Full Age, Batchelor, Engineer, Bow, father John McDonald Brass Moulder
Annie Price, Full Age, Spinster, Bow, father John Price Cordwainer
Annie has signed x her mark (as she did on Arthur's BC).
All straight forward except that John has gone from engineer to bus driver, but I still think this is correct.
Now I have been searching for John's birth and John Snr for ages. John McDonald is an extremely common name and nothing has jumped out at me with the exception of a birth in 1859 in Poplar. Poplar and Stratford (1891 census) are quite close, so I bit the bullet and ordered the BC.
I now have 17 May 1859 Poplar, John, Boy, father John McDonald labourer at gas works, mother Elizabeth McDonald formerly Daley.
So to 1861 and I found this:-
RG9, Piece 1059, Folio 232, Page 66
West Ham, Essex.
Firstly, can anyone read the address?
John McDonald, Head, Mar, 55, Labourer at Chemical Factory, Ireland
Elizabeth McDonald, Wife, Mar, 45, Ireland
Caroline McDonald, Daur, 17, Somerset Bristol
Michael McDOnald, Son, 12, Somerset Bristol
Elizabeth McDonald, Daur, 9, Somerset Bristol
Alexander McDonald, Son, 5, Essex Plaistow
John McDonald, Son, 2, Essex Plaistow
Again, Plaistow/Poplar/Stratford seem to be interchangeable but.....John is blind from birth! So how did he become an engineer and then a bus driver!
I have searched for this family in other years, but no luck.
So do I have the right family? Could blind from birth be a mistake? Any suggestions welcome!
