  • Colindale closure date confirmed

    From the WDYTYA Magazine website:

    "Colindale closure date confirmed
Researchers have until 8 November to explore the British Library’s newspaper archive at Colindale before the collections are transferred to a brand new storage facility in West Yorkshire

A closing date for British Library’s newspaper archive at Colindale has been announced.

The North London facility will finally close to the public on 8 November 2013 as its collections are transferred to a purpose-built storage centre in West Yorkshire.

In preparation for the move, most of the collections – which together make up more than 750 million pages of local, regional and national newspapers – will then be unavailable until February 2014, when the British Library’s flagship branch at St Pancras opens its new Newspaper Reading Room.

Researchers will be able to view microfilm or digital copies of documents rather than handling the originals, many of which are fragile and require specialist care.

If no ‘surrogate’ copy of a newspaper exists and the original is deemed fit to travel, it can be delivered to St Pancras within 48 hours. This service is not expected to become available to users until autumn 2014."
