    just received a birth certificate and under the informant columb its says "x mark of catherine alice lane"mother.
    anyone know what this means?

    Perhaps she could not read or write and and so signed the legal document with an X?

      I was just about to say that too - and to add that sometimes folk that could write did it also when the registrar said "put your mark there", that's what they did.
      It wasn't the way to question authority!
