Bonjour à tous! I am French and some of my ancestors came from England as lacemakers to produce tulle and lace in Calais. I am quite comfortable with French records of any kind, but it seems to be different in England (especially for searching on Internet) and I need some help. The first records I'm searching for are in Leicestershire (1780's to 1850's), and also a wedding in Dover.

Thank you for your replies. Here is what I got and what I search for.
My father's grand-mother's parents were George HALL & Charlotte FARRANDS. They possibly got married in Dover in 1846 (this has to be confirmed).
George HALL was born in Quorndon (Leic.) on Nov. 21, 1823 (that is the only record I got). He died in Calais in 1896. His father was George HALL who died in Ibstock (Leic.) on March 25, 1852 and was probably born there in 1790-1800. George HALL Jr.'s mother was Ann GODBER who died in Calais in 1854 and was born in Sileby (Leic.) ca. 1792. I got some information they could have been married in Nottingham in 1807.
Charlotte FARRANDS died in Calais in 1898 and was born ca. 1821 but I don't know where. Her father was William FARRANDS who was born in Westbrigford (Nott.) ca. 1787 (parents were John and Suzanne STANLEY) and died in Calais in 1866. Her mother was Anna BUTLER whom I got not information yet. As they got two sons born ca. 1810, they probably got married ca. 1810 too, and Anna BUTLER was probably born ca. 1790.
I hope you can help me.

Thank you, Wendy.
I already subscribed to FreeREg, but I am not comfortable with it yet. My first steps there just made me think that it is much different (and harder) to do researches in English websites than I'm used to here. Also, there seems to be much less information in English records comparing to what we got here, and I am a little confused about how far I can go into past.

Charlotte FARRANDS and George HALL did marry in Dover in Q4 (OCT-DEC) of 1846 The reference is vol 5 page 225. Using those details you can order a copy of the marriage certificate from here (cost £9.25):
The certificate should confirm their father's names and occupations.Retired professional researcher, and ex- deputy registrar, now based in Worcestershire. Happy to give any help or advice I can ( especially on matters of civil registration) - contact via PM or my website www.chalfontresearch.co.uk

William Godber was a framework knitter, have quite a bit for Sileby
Ann was baptised 1 Apr 1792 parents William and Mary, there are 8 children in all and I can post that when you have collected the rest together and had a look
William is buried 18 Mar 1801
All that is different is the marriage of John Farrands to Susanna and if you think William's wife is Hannah not Anna, but as always, these will need checking with the orignals...might be able to help out thereElaine

It also links to other material I already got in National Archives in Paris, as William FARRANDS has become French in 1829 (nobody's perfect!...). So I already got his birth date (and baptism record) without knowing it, and maybe other details I have to check. The papers coming from England were with nice wax seals and I will send you the pictures if you want.
It seems most of those people worked in lace productions. Edwin and George FARRANDS had some patents in France, and I got those documents too, for anyone interested in lace making.
To reply to your question about Hannah/Anna, "Hannah" is used in the French succession document I got. I just Wonder if it could be a Jewish first name (that is how it would be in France).
I don't know how far it is possible (and easy) to go. In France, the oldest record I got is dated 1611, and yesterday a man spoke in a TV show he went back to year 242! 64 or 65 générations, but only possible because a line crossed some nobility, and not only in France. Let's have a dream!

You are right to tell it is not easy to open our mind to another system. It is why I created another thread to offer my help in France. What I hope in England is not to pay for each record I need, besides of price, it is also a question of time spent (almost all parish and civil records are online and free in France). I don't imagine having people searching for me either.
So, thank you for the link to Genuki and Lace Market. I will go there tonight. I am already in touch with Quorn village, and I plan to visit Leicestershire this summer. It is strange how genealogical researches make you discover many other things (here lace making). There is a very good museum in Calais, and I guess there is one in Nottingham too. It seems to be the "craddle" of mechanical lace.

Most information can be searched for free in the UK if you go to local libraries, local archives or The National Archive (TNA). This includes parish records, census returns, military records, passenger lists etc. etc. Most of this information is available online from Find My Past or Ancestry, but you have to pay a subscription. Family Search is free, but their records are limited.
However one notable exception are civil registration certificates. These were produced from Sept 1837 until the present day for births, marriages and deaths and are held at local record offices with copies at the General Register Office (GRO) in London. These certificates are £9.50 each (about €11) from the GRO, but prices vary at local offices.
The only free information for births, marriages and deaths is that held in the indexes, but the information is limited to only the year, quarter and name. Later birth index entries have the mother's maiden name as well, and later death indexes have age at death. Marriages do not have the spouse; you have to pair them up from either 8 or 4 people on the same page.
Hope this helps.Last edited by PeteW1959; 18-06-13, 10:51.Co-ordinator for PoW project Southern Region 08
