  • Travel to Switzerland 1914

An ancestor left Berlin for Switzerland in 1914. Unfortunately it is not known where in Switzerland. I understand they probably would have travelled by the railway and my question is would there have border records, then where would I begin to look for any information on them in Switzerland? Rather vague but perhaps someone has some knowledge of Switzerland.

    Many thanks.

take a look at the swiss national archives site:

if you can't find anything, email them and see if they can help.

      Thank-u Kyle.
I did email one of the Swiss archives, not sure, may have been Zurich, who did not find anything and recommended I tried Basel. It looks as though this will be a difficult search not knowing exactly where they went, how they travelled etc. However, another email to the central archives might well be the way to go.

1914 was a significant year in Europe (outbreak of WW1) so the success of your search outcomes could depend upon the time of year in which the journey took place.

Unfortunately I do not know how and when they travelled. All I know is that they did not appear in the Trade Directories in Charlottenburg, after 1914. One of the main archives in Switzerland has been helpful in sending me a very comprehensive list of places to search. However, while it is comprehensive it is also very complicated and each link sends you off in many directions, plus it is mostly in German so I am beginning to feel my search has stuttered to a halt before hardly off the ground.

Thank-u for the Links. Unfortunately the kunden.eye says "The Page cannot be Displayed" and with the National Archives it brings up all references to English sites and I am not sure where to go with that. I am probably overlooking something and I do apologise.dreen22

The Horne collection "Sketch maps of Southern Germany and the Swiss border [for escape purposes] X/942A/1/10 n.d. [1914-1918] " so shows border crossing places which you asked for

As for swissgen, it was up and running when I posted, but it doesn't seem so now, it is a shame there was a Swiss genealogy forum on it and lotss of very interesting information, maybe it is worth checking to see if/when it comes back up
