  • Census lookup from reference

I have been sent this reference:#Record set: 1871 census
    Census reference: RG10 Piece:623 Folio:56 Page:50

I cannot see how to look it up using FMP. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Alternatively, if it can be done in Ancestry could someone look it up and give me enough details to do a person search on FMP?
    People: Canton, Wiseman, Colthup, Scrace
    Places: Pembrokeshire, Kent.

Well I found it on Ancestry Webwiz - just trying to find the link for you on FMP with the names.
p.s. It's an Allan family - does that sound right?

Go to census search and search by name - at the bottom right of the panel where you put the search details there is blue text 'census reference search' click that. Here's where I'm talking about on an example using 1911 http://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/census/1911/person

Thanks Chrissie. That's really peculiar. I submit quite a lot of transcription errors to FMP and always get an email when they have agreed the change. Yesterday I got such an email:

Thank you for reporting a transcription error.

We have reviewed the transcription changes that you have reported:

        Record set: 1871 census
        Census reference: RG10 Piece:623 Folio:56 Page:50

We have made the following change to the transcript:

Other where born from '' to '??'
Other where born from '' to '??'
Other where born from '' to '??'
Other where born from '' to 'Maidstone'

However I do remember submitting such a strange correction, nor do I recollect looking up any Allan.

Thanks for the help with FMP Margaret but this reference is invalid. I think FMP have had a glitch.

I'm quite a novice on FMP but have loads of credits to use up. I don't think I'm going to use them all in time though as I can't seem to find them. I have tried everything but must be doing something wrong. They are a fairly large family living in Newington London - the father is James Allen born 1826 Newington - wife Charlotte born 1829 - son James J born 1853 (All Newington). Then 6 more sons and daughters.

If you still can't find them I will keep looking, or perhaps someone else more used to FMP. This experience certainly hasn'r endeared me to FMP as I found it straight away on Ancestry.

Sorry by the way - it was Allen - not Allan as in my first post.

It took me so long to search and post again that I've only just seen Margaret's and your replies

After much hunting around on Ancestry, I have discovered that if you click on 'Old Search' link (on the right, under the toolbar at the top of the screen, you are provided with a window to type in piece, folio and page number. I brought up a lot of surnames.....Allen, Arnold, Arthur, Canton, Gregory, Kennedy, Parker, Smith, Stackwood, Trodd, all resident in St Mary Newington London.

                    Something new learnt every day

Oops...must be a very slow learner. Lots of responses while I was working it all out :o

Thanks Chrissie, please don't use up your FMP credits! If you have an Ancestry sub (not credits) could you give me more details of the head so that I can find him on FMP using a person search (full name, age, and the most unusual of the other first names in the household should do it).

If you find the page webwiz would you please come back and tell me how you found them. I STILL can't find them on FMP.

p.s. The credits aren't a problem. I have over 300 to use up in the next three days

                                Chrissie

I have finally sussed it. This is not going to endear you to FMP! To do a reference search on FMP as Margaret says start with the person search. To get there you have to select a census year, so I entered 1871, but I did not notice that on the next screen it asks for the year again and defaults to 1841!

thanks for your help and interest

But I still cannot make any sense of the email from FMP which triggered this all.

Lol Michael Thank you for that, that's probably why they weren't there then (most not born by 1841)

We all have a moan about Ancestry sometimes but I'm used to it's 'quirks' now and I don't think I could cope with having to keep clearing everything before a new search and without a list of similar names etc that could be them but just mistranscribed in some way. I suppose we all have our favourite sites.
