  • Indian research - David Easton

A new-found FTF contact has set me on the road of sorting out David Easton. I have his beginning and end but there's a bit missing in the middle.

Born to Rev. Matthew George Easton and Ann Colts Dobbie 15 Jul 1850 and baptised at Girvan Ayrshire 29 Jul 1850 (from Familysearch).
With the family in 1851 (Girvan), 1861 (Girvan) and 1871 (Loudon/Darvel). By 1871 he is a merchant aged 20.

He then marries Isabella McBride on 8 Dec 1903 in Calcutta, India (from FIBIS).
They return from Bombay to Liverpool on the Olympia, arriving on 8 May 1919 (UK Incoming Shipping from Ancestry).
And 2 weeks later on 24 May 1919 he dies in Pollokshields, Glasgow (from Scottish Wills on ScotlandsPeople). The will index gives 2 former addresses for him in Calcutta.
Isabella dies in 1951 in Prestwick, Ayrshire (Scottish Wills on ScotlandsPeople).

If I've got the right family for Isabella, she's still living with her parents in Glasgow in 1901.

So any idea what happened to David between 1871 and 1903, and when did he and Isabella sail to India?

I know that the father Matthew George was a well-loved minister, and the church in Darvel was renamed after him after his death.

Wonder if this is the chap mentioned in the probate

TheGlasgowStory tells the story of Glasgow in words and pictures, told by some of Scotland's best writers, and illustrated with thousands of images from the collections of the city's world-famous libraries, museums and universities. From football to fashions, Auchenshuggle to Yoker, you'll find it all here.

a bit of history on the site as well

...Raw materials for the textile industry were imported by Glasgow merchants, who in turn helped finance production and sold finished goods in the world market. The merchant community grew rich on the tobacco trade with North America, which was eclipsed by the American War of Independence (1775-1783). Resourceful, Glasgow merchants found new markets in such places as Canada, the West Indies and later India. With the coming of peace with the United States in 1783 the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, the first of its kind, was established to represent the interests of business within the city. It united merchants and manufacturers and proved an effective pressure group with government.

            Hi Elaine

Thanks for all the new leads.
Post #2 Where are these voyages listed, please?
Post #4 Thanks for the corroboration of Isabella's death (edit - that was actually the reference I'd found, not a Scottish will) and the marriage.
Post #5 Off to have a look. I immediately thought of jute, though it is/was mainly centred on Dundee (edit - the link is to Andrew James Hutton, a surgeon).

Thanks Elaine. I've just got my Ancestry sub. upgraded to World after buying FTM 2011 World edition. Had to phone them as it wouldn't override my current UK Premium sub. Off to take a look now.
