Does anyone know of a free way to search for obituaries?

On the grave of Thomas Phillips yesterday there was a little inscription at the bottom-
    John Phillips
    Ever Remembered.

He was born in 1903 and Thomas died in 1937 so I guess it's a random search between 1903-1937.
Although he's in the 1911 census so it rules out those first years- oh and he's not the biological child of Thomas and his wife Elizabeth.
Lennon. Phillips. Thomas. Peacock. Tubridy. Burton.

You may be lucky enough to find something in online newspapers - obviously it does help if you've got a death date, particularly with a relatively common name.
These is a small collection of United Kingdom and Ireland Obituary Collection on Ancestry - with info taken from newspapers.

maybe the other one was added at a later date. May I put the grave up for an estimated time before deleting it?
That way it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about..

You can post a picture as long as there is no copyright issue!

maybe it might be best to PM it then, I did get it from the Gravestone Photographic Society.
I forgot about that bit, sorry.

            PM received.

You often find other family names inscribed on headstones - the inscription for John could have been added at any time, even after Thomas' death. Perhaps John died in another area, away from Stockton, and by recording his name on this headstone the family had some way of "remembering" him.

Could it have been the War? I do actually need to figure out who John really is. He's not the biological child, the census says Nephew but there's a faint adopted there as well.

Yes it could be the war. Have you checked on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site to see if there is a possible entry there.

I have several gravestones which record the whole family, but some of the people died all over the world.
