View Full Version : Alfred Chapman Thomas

Alfred was born in 1869, Stockton-On-Tees.
His siblings were Jacob, Thomas, Joseph & Emily.
His Mother was Mary Chapman (definately a Chapman by birth)
In the 1871 census his Mother is a servant to Evan Thomas and in the next she's his wife
Alfred is naturally noted as the servan't son as is Jacob.
I never found a marriage between Mary & Evan.
In all the birth searches Alfred is noted as a Chapman & not a Thomas.

I haven't got him in the 1891 census

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1901wales&h=31795210&indiv=try&o_vc=Record:OtherRecord&rhSource=2352 - a possible 1901 census.

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1911England&h=37085897&indiv=try&o_vc=Record:OtherRecord&rhSource=7572- a possible 1911 census, note the James Thomas living with him as a boarder (no idea who he is).

Can anyone possibly see a connection between the first 2 census records to the last please?
Cheers guys..

If it were my tree, I think I would want to investigate the 1894 Stockton marriage of an Alfred Chapman. One of the possible brides was Mary Elizabeth Thomas. James Thomas in 1911 census could have been her brother. Mary & James COULD have been related to Evan - Mary was born in Wales, but James in Stockton. . . . . Jay

Could this be the future Mrs Alfred Chapman in 1891? http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=1&gsfn=mary&gsln=thomas&sx=&f1=&f2=stockton&f4=&f18=&f12__n=&rg_81004011__date=1875&rs_81004011__date=0&f27=&f14=&f15=&_8000C002=&_80008002=&_80018002=&f7=&f8=&f9=&gskw=&prox=1&db=uki1891&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=35&fh=0&h=684955&recoff=

It may be. As I say I always thought that he was a Thomas by birth but when I went back over the research I noticed the birth was as Chapman and not Thomas, I must have been thinking of Jacob for that bit.

So a search of Stockton Roots brings out Alfred Chapman & May E Thomas in 1894 as you said Janet.

That still doesn't prove a definite link between the two though, although it looks a good possibility, especially if there was only the one Alfred Chapman born Stockton in pre 1901 census. You really need to see the cert (or church copy if it was a church wedding) to find out the name of the father (or not) of Alfred Chapman. ...... Jay
