  • Accidental Drowning of George Agar in Unstone, Derbyshire on 13.11.1877

    Dear Members,

I originally posted a request for information on this tragedy on 02.04.2012.

How fortunate and delighted I was, when fellow member "Night Owl" was able to send me extracts from "The Sheffield and Rotherham Independent" newspaper dated 14. and 16.November 1877, in which, this accident was reported.

On 15. November 1877, an inquest was held at the "Fleur-de-Lys Inn" in Unstone by a Mr Busby (the incumbent Coroner), on the body of George Agar - who had been found drowned in the River Drone on Tuesday, 13. November 1877, aged 75.

How ironic - the inquest into the cause of his death, being held in the same public bar, where he had been drinking on the previous Sunday, when he went missing.

On my earlier post, there were still many questions that remained unanswered - so I would like to have another try (if this is permitted) to get answers to the following:

    a. These inquest records are lying in some Archive - but where? Any ideas?

    b. According to the newspaper article, George Agar was living with his son in New Unstone. The christian name(s) of his son is/are still a mystery.
Can anyone find those christian name(s)?

I have the death certificate for George Agar and his wife, Maria Agar who died on 09.11.1873, aged 68. At the time of her death she was living at "The Green" in Belgrave, Leicester. So that would indicate that George and his son moved to Derbyshire, sometime after her death.

Basically, any additional information concerning this research, would be much appreciated (no matter how trivial).

    Many thanks,

    Brian

Thanks Elaine - Rosetta is my greatgrandmother (mothers side). You have also confirmed what I have in my records, that William's wife was Emily Aldred Battersby.
