  • Charles William Turk

Hi I am trying to find information about Charles William Turk (B: Jul 1845 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England) he married Alice ? (B: 1841 Whittingham, Northumberland, England) but I don't know when. In the 1881 census they live in Tanfield Durham, he is 36 and the oldest child is 19 so if he married Alice first they must have been married about 1861, but he would only have been 16 :-/ There seem to be a few Charles Turks in various family trees on Ancestry but they have different information and I cannot find the records to verify the links. Any help appreciated. Thanks for reading. (PS: His daughter Edith is my G.Grandmother)

There is a marriage on FreeBMD in 1867 in Cheltenham that has 4 names listed, 2 of which are Charles William Turk and Alice Brown. If this is the right one, its possible that the children born before then were Alice's especially as she is older than Charles. On the 1881 the 2 oldest children were born in Morpeth and the next one, Joshua W, was born in Cheltenham in 1868 (FreeBMD Joshua William Turk Q/E March 1868, Cheltenham)

The marriage posted by Jackie looks very likely. Unfortunately you will need to buy the certificate for proof as the marriage was at the Register Office, so there won't be a parish register entry, see here ............. http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bm...ageSearch.aspx

Do you know Charles' father's name? If so you can order the marriage cert stipulating father's name must be whatever, and if the father on the cert has a different name, they won't send the cert and you won't be charged. Only buy from the GRO, http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

In 1911 on Ancestry, he's indexed as Charles YURK http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...1-&bsk=&pgoff=

I think the first child - Mary b1861 is illegitimate and that her mother is Alice Brown.

Maybe this one http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?h...=&pid=13028752 as the name Mary features for mother and sister.

The only way to know for sure is to get the marriage cert for Alice and Charles.

If any of your TURKs wandered over the county boundary into Wiltshire, then that BMD site include MMN from the start!

... Actually so does the Gloucs BMD site.

But you have to hope that your bit has been transcribed.
