  • Marriage Bonds

I have a listing of a marriage bond. It seems to give details of the 2 people and then says "Bn: James Atkinson" (possibly my ancestor) and his address. Does anyone know what "Bn" means?

An educated guess- Bondsman, ie the person putting up the bond money

Concur with Judith - the bondsman is usually included in the information

Be careful with marriage bonds the second person is sometimes fictitious.

Really? I've learned something new today

          Why was that?

I can't locate it, but there was a thread recently, which discussed the second "person" was sometimes listed as "John Doe". Elaine found the reference - I can't even find the thread!

i have heard that sometimes the bondsmen was ficitonal, but looking at the marriage allegation for allertonshire on familysearch, they have all signed (the bondsmen). so unless they got someone to fake their identity for the bond, it seems pretty difficult.

Note that Guy used the word "sometimes." As with all procedures, if necessary, some individuals would find a way round an obstruction.

Elaine, can you find the thread that talked about John Doe? I thought that thread talked about the bonds man evolving into a fictitious person?
