  • Leonard Percy COCKS in 1911? - Solved on Ancestry!

I am having trouble locating Leonard in 1911. I suspect it's because he's [a] in the Navy and [b] badly transcribed!

This is what I have for him in preceding records, and the nearest subsequent ones...
    • b 4 Jul 1885 [ChapelRegr #696; Seaman 212346; ADM196/156; ADM196/164] 1885q3 Stoke D 5b/307
    • bap 8 Sep 1885 Ker St Wesleyan Methodist, D'port. Leonard Percy s/o Charles Harrison & Elizabeth Ann COCKS; D'port [ChapelRegr #696]
    • 1891 RG12/1746 fo 123 p 45: "Leonard P COCKS" age 5, scholar, 14 Herbert St, Stoke Damerel
    • 1901 RG13/2187 fo 122 p 31: "Leonard P COCKS" age 15, Boy (under training) 2nd Cl; HMS Lion, Maker Heights
    • 1911 ?????
    • m 11 Nov 1911 Totnes RO [5b/413], age 26; 1st Class Petty Offr RN, 8 Brandreth Terr, Devonport
    • 1 Apr 1912: Seamanship passed 1st (86.9%) at Devonport [ADM196/156]

His parents were: Charles Harrison COCKS, and Elizabeth Ann née PRYNN. I have found them in 1911, along with Leonard's younger sister, Hilda, but not Leonard. Similarly I have found his elder brother, Stanley, with his wife, Alice.

I've tried all sorts of tricks - mainly on FMP.co.uk & FMP.com. I'm about to have a go on Ancestry, now, but thought that one of the census wizards might like the challenge!

    Well - nearly solved.

I've found a record for him, on HMS Pyramus... but his name is struck through!

Thank you for looking those out. I had found them - but would rather know twice than not at all!

Ancestry mentions that the Pyramus is amongst the vessels in "Australia & South Africa", so I tried the ship's name in Trove. It does show up, and the dates tie in quite well. The ship was certainly there at the time of the 1911 census, and the crews were changed over, with the "time-expired" crews sailing home in August 1911 - which would have been in time for a November wedding, I think.

He wouldn't have been an officer at that stage so he doesn't get named anywhere explicitly.

Did he sail home on a Navy vessel or a merchant ship? If the latter he may be on a passenger list.

Hadn't thought of that. Thank you! My first impression was that he was on a navy ship... but possibly not for the whole journey. I must go and have a look!
