  • Birth records for Philadelphia, PA, USA, in the 1890s?

    Hi there,

Just wondering where and how I even start researching some American family history? The people in question are British citizens who were born in Philadelphia in the late 1880s/early 1890s, but I don't know if there is a BMD or anything similar I can use?

    Thanks!

The FTF Reference Library has lots of useful-looking links: http://www.familytreeforum.com/conte...6-Pennsylvania

The main thing you need to have in mind with USA research is that the name of the country is a clue to one of the major impediments (from the perspective of a UK researcher). United States of America... Each State has its own BMD system, to which you would have to apply for certificates. There are a few centralised elements (many states allow you to use a centralised payments system... if you have enough detail), but the records themselves are kept at State level - or (occasionally) even more locally.

Researching: BENNETT (Leics/Birmingham-ish) - incl. Leonard BENNETT in Detroit & Florida ; WARR/WOR, STRATFORD & GARDNER/GARNAR (Oxon); CHRISTMAS, RUSSELL, PAFOOT/PAFFORD (Hants); BIGWOOD, HAYLER/HAILOR (Sussex); LANCASTER (Beds, Berks, Wilts) - plus - COCKS (Spitalfields, Liverpool, Plymouth); RUSE/ROWSE, TREMEER, WADLIN(G)/WADLETON (Devonport, E Cornwall); GOULD (S Devon); CHAPMAN, HALL/HOLE, HORN (N Devon); BARRON, SCANTLEBURY (Mevagissey)...

familysearch has many Philadelphia birth records.

Problem is, altho they were probably supposed to register births, they might not have

        ** snap, Elaine!

If you do find one, I think familysearch has the actual images online.

If they were British Citizens they might appear in the Overseas BMDs (on FMP or free to access on www.familyrelatives.com ).
