  • Bolton burials online

    From the WDYTYA Magazine site:

Explore thousands of Bolton burials online

209,000 further burial and cremation records will soon be added to Deceased Online, complementing the 211,000 entries uploaded earlier this month

Bolton Council has become the first authority in Greater Manchester and Lancashire to release digital copies of their cemetery records online.

A total of 420,000 burial and cremation records will made available at Deceased Online over the next few weeks, complementing the 211,000 entries from Tonge and Heaton cemeteries uploaded to the site earlier this month.

As well as allowing the public to view basic information about the grave and its occupant, the service will also make digital scans of registers, maps of the cemeteries and a selection of memorial photographs available.

Material already uploaded includes a photograph showing the headstone of celebrated steeplejack Fred Dibnah in Tonge Cemetery, and the burial records of Thomas McCarte, a lion tamer who was killed when he was devoured during a circus performance.

“We are delighted that Bolton is the first council in the Greater Manchester and Lancashire area to join in becoming part of a growing national database for these records," says Deceased Online's Richard Gray.
"Keen family historians and those tracing their ancestry can access the data easily and we now have registered users in 75 countries worldwide.”
