  • Divorce query

I recently came across a divorce for one of my Great Grand Uncles in 1886.

It names him and his wife and another man who she later married. Next to the entry is Pauper Cause.
Can anyone tell me what Pauper Cause means - is it a legal term?

I don't know the answer to your query but I would recommend you get hold of the full papers from TNA. I had a divorce in this same year and the paperwork included several documents of stuff and named all the families.

I went to TNA and was able to photograph all the sheets myself.

It means the divorce was paid for out of a fund set aside for people who could not afford a divorce. Often church based, surprisingly enough, because the church was anxious to punish the guilty (especially a guilty wife) and reward the innocent.
