  • Sophia Dudgeon b1803

Trying to find out the relationship between Sophia and Catherine Dudgeon (b1848 Leicester) ... Catherine's one month old grandson is buried in the same grave as Sophia (and others, at present assumedly unrelated).

Is Sophia Catherine's mother / are they related in some way? ... hoping that the 1851 census will answer this question, so would be grateful for lookup.

    Thanks

4 Chew's Yard, St. Margarets. The next street shown on the census is Crab Street, now known as St. Mark's Street, which is just off Belgrave Gate.

            1841 census:

            Thos Dudgeon, 25, cordwainer
            Sophia Dudgeon, 30
            Alexander Dudgeon, 6
            Alice Dudgeon, 2

All born in county and living in Bedford Street (also near Belgrave Gate). My 3xGF was living a bit further up Bedford Street at the time.

Children baptised to Thomas and Sophia Dudgeon at St. Margaret's:

              Alexander, 28/1/1835
              Alice Frances 9/10/1839

              No sign of Catherine.

It looks as though Alice married Joseph Smart. Alexander died in 1850, but he doesn't seem to be listed at the Welford Road cemetery.

              1861 census:

Thomas MacLean Dudgeon, head, 46, cordwainer, born St. Mary's, Leicester
Sophia Dudgeon, wife, 50, born St. Leonard's, Leicester
Catherine Dudgeon, daughter, 13, servant, born St. Margaret's, Leicester

All living at 1 Willow Cottages, St. Margaret's.

He dies in 1885 at the workhouse and he's buried with an Ann Scrimshire (presumably one of yours) and a couple of other people.

Wow, thanks ever so much for all the info you've both found.

Not heard of Chews Yard before.

My 3xGF was living a bit further up Bedford Street at the time.
... It's likely that our ancestors may have known each other as we seem to have several past finds in the same areas

I've not had time to research the others buried with Sophia .. thanks Elaine for the info you found.
