News from the WDYTYA Magazine site:

Family historians with links to Cambridgeshire may now find it easier to order birth, marriage and death certificates from the local authority following the launch of a new online database.

The result of a partnership agreement between Cambridgeshire County Council Registration Service and Cambridgeshire Family History Society, CAMDEX allows users to search over two million local records dating back to the introduction of civil registration in 1837.

Once an entry has been located, a copy of the certificate can then be ordered and paid for directly through the site at a cost of £10.

When the registration of all births, marriages and deaths was first made compulsory, the original indexes were re-transcribed each quarter by hand, meaning that misspellings of names could sometimes occur.

However, the fact that database has been compiled from the primary indexes as opposed to the transcribed versions held at the General Register Office means that researchers may be able to acquire more detailed – and accurate – records.

The Camdex list has been available for quite a long time... but of course, it's always helpful to remind people of these facilities. It may be that the online ordering facility is new - I can't remember (probably because I haven't had occasion to order from Cambridgeshire).

For anyone interested in the local BMD options that are available (and there are quite a lot - many with detail that is not available on the GRO index), do have a look at UKBMD's Local BMD page.

This is my FTF thread, where we give notice of updates that we hear about on the various sites: http://www.familytreeforum.com/showt...recent-updates
