  • Convict to Van Dieman's Land

    Hi

Can someone please see if they can trace this person in Australia.

    Richard EMBLIN (EMBLEN)
born 7 Apr 1824 Stoke Lane, Somerset

Married Jane CHIVERS 1843 in Somerset

Convicted at the Quarter sessions at Wells, Somerset 26 Oct 1846 to 10 years

Transported on the 'Cornwall' to Van Dieman's Land Fed 1851

1851 census Jane and daughter Elizabeth aged 5 are living in Stoke Lane
1861 census Jane is living with Stephen BLACKER and has had 3 more children

1861 Stephen and Jane get married

Is there any record of Richard surviving the voyage?
Is there any record of his life after 1851?

Stephen BLACKER and Jane are my sister in laws 2x gt grandparents

    Thanks for any help

    He arrived on 11/6/1851 - see http://foundersandsurvivors.org/pubs.../chain/ai21881

I haven't as yet found anything after that date.

      Thank you.

      So much information on there.

I think Jane waited 10 years from the time he was transported to marry Stephen.

Hope you can find out how he got on.

Could he have have won his freedom and maybe came back and died here ?
There is a Richard Emblin born abt 1825 in England on the 1892 New York Census ? dont know how common a name that is ?

Thank you Val I had not seen that tree.

the 1857 pardon would have been his 10 years plus the add on for being bad boy.

Still not a lot on his life after his pardon.

          Bet something will turn up.

they seem to think he may have died before 1861 in that tree

I think that the died before 1861 is (ref 4) that he is not on the 1861 English census.

if he was pardoned, he could have gone anywhere.
