Mary Ann CORNWALL listed as born c.1835,1836,1838 and 1839 in:-

Mother Elizabeth occ. Nurse born c. 1821 Ireland (living with John and Mary Ann on 1861 census)

Can anyone please throw some light on RRC and Elizabeth

Found an Elizabeth Cornwall 1820 Ireland living as a Monthly Nurse with Rueben Wigley as Head of House in Colchester, Essex. on 1871

On 1881 Elizabeth Cornwall 1819 born Kerry Ireland in Colchester Union Workhouse.

Don't know if this is any help. Can't find a death that fits though and can't find anyone on 1901

What age does Mary Ann give on the marriage record - that is likely to be the most accurate one as she is giving the information directly rather than though an enunerator.

in theory that;s right margaret, but the irish and scots as a rule had no idea how old they were. their ages are extremely fluid in census, more so than normal in england lol.

It's also worth remembering that there was sometimes an incentive to supply an age which was not accurate: particularly [1] to declare a more conventional age-gap between the partners to the marriage, and [2] to evade under-age rules.

Just checked cert again both parties given as Full Age, however I was mistaken in that RRC is not given as deceased but Elizabeth is a widow in 61 census, cert dated May 27 1860.

                As an aside ...

When I first saw the heading to this thread, I interpreted it as "Robert ROWE, Cornwall". If you haven't looked already, I'd suggest that there are likely to be Cornish connections, because ROWE is certainly a name found in Cornwall. Originally, people acquired surnames to distinguish themselves, one from another, - in much the way that there's still a bit of a tradition in Wales to refer to people as something like "Dai, the baker" (occasionally dropping "the"). Having "Cornwall" as a surname would suggest that the person was outside the county, but had come from there.

                  Robert Roe Cornwall

Just wondering if it should be Roe instead of Rowe? There is a Robert Roe Cornwall in my family tree. He was born about 1815 in Ireland and studied medicine at Glasgow University.

Surnames were spelled in many ways in the past depending on who wrote down the information and how it sounded with an accent.
