Just for interest and also to explain about my wafflings on name changing!

John Hermann's daughter Dorothea married William George a solicitors managing clerk, in 1869, she married as Anna Dorathea L Hermann.

William and Anna D L George are with John and Jessey Hermann in the 1871 census.

In 1891 William and Anna D L George are living at 2 Franklin Terrace, Potter-Newton, Yorkshire, living with them is John G Herman (transcribed as Hermason) Prof of Music.

I see that John changes to the surname Hermann from the 1861 census onwards, maybe it was simply to sound less German or perhaps they decided that Hermann was easier to pronounce? I noticed on familysearch that the name Hoffke/Hofke has an umlaut over the o so without the umlaut it would sound completely different if spoken in English. Rather than have to listen to their name pronounced incorrectly they decided on Hermann? All guesses of course.

Theodore marries as Hermann in 1858 - September, St Geo Hanover Square, 1a 410. That certificate will give you the name and occupation of his father, although I personally am sure it is the same family. It would be astonishing if it wasn't.

You may never know exactly why they dropped the Hoffke name but I would imagine it is a mixture of being "too foreign" and therefore too distinctive - something to do with the bankruptcy, as you say.

We have friends in Germany who sometimes use both their names, and sometimes just the husband's. In their case, it must be at least partly because the husband's name is very common in the village, so the joining of his wife's surname helps to distinguish them.
