Thread: Ann Dudley (Simms) nee Harcourt

Is it possible to merge both of Paul's threads about Ann (Dudley) Simms to keep all the info in one place as Chrissie has just said it is a bit confusing?

Oh dear am I causing confusion with everyone. I shall reply seperately to all these answers so apologies if you have posted another as you will get another reply. nancy is often used instead on Ann. My mom is Annie and all her family call her Nancy. I can't read the '51 census.

I thought if that was the case the child would take the mothers surname as the middle name. Why did they use her surname (Simms) as their surname? Something I will probably never know.

The witness' were Samuel Hickinbottom and Pheobe Hickinbottom. Have I seen these names somewhere else in these threads?

I shall take a look Chrissie at your other messages. Apologies about the Cordwainer, now I know. Why a Cordwainer can someone explain or should I google it.

If you mean John Dudley Simms Paul, it will be because he was born as John Simms when his mother was married to a Simms. His father died and his mother remarried a Dudley while he was quite young, so he probably adopted that as his middle name as a sign of respect.

Now then, there is somewhat of a bit of confusion..

my grandmother had the names of Florence Shelton Brown, (Shelton being her middle name, and also the name of her biological father) she was baptised under these names and also registered under the same names, her parents, Miss Brown and Mr Shelton married when Florence was 6 months old. seems to me the reason she was given the middle name of Shelton was to say that her father was Mr Shelton but they hadn't yet got round to getting wed.

after Miss Brown & Mr Shelton married Florence was known as Miss Shelton (as she dropped the 'Brown' bit) and married as Miss Shelton without ever being re-registered or formally changing her name!.
