Pawnbrokers - Sydney
Hi - does anybody know if there is a database of Pawnbrokers/Second Hand Dealers who would have operated in Sydney from around 1905 onwards. According to this site, they would have needed a licence. At this stage, I believe the location was in Paddington.

Have you tried the Australian Newspapers?

If you know a surname more the better, if not try> pawnbroker paddington. Perhaps notification of licenses appeared in the papers.

Also if you had a name - Ancestry have Sand's Directories of Sydney available - though unfortunately using pawnbroker as a keyword search term doesn't bring up anything.
I wonder if the State Library might have other directories - http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/services/ask/index.html
Good Luck

Hi - thanks Keldon and SueNSW for your ideas. Well..it's not an easy one. Since looking at the beta site..there were also Second Hand Dealer Licences...not just ones for Pawnbroking. I do have a possible surname at the moment which is Rosenthal. I don't have access to Sands..but do they have a category of Second Hand? Thanks.

NSW State Records may have records of Pawnbrokers Licences, the State Govt would have been the licensing authority - it may be that the indexes are not on-line though, which will mean visting the Reading Room.
Also the microfiche versions of Sands also have listings by street and trade, but these are not available on Ancestry. Many f.h. libraries have the microfiche. If you don't have access to fiche versions, send me a pm and I can visit the fh library in Parramatta, which I know has the microfiche.

Hi again - thanks for all of this info. I'm going to try and find a bit more about it. There might also be another surname involved.
Di - thanks for the offer. Will report back here asap.
