  • Can't find Samuel Firth and family after 1881

In 1881 Census at Cutler Heights Lane, Tong which becomes N.Brierley or Bradford

Samuel Firth is 28 born Tong, a stuff finisher
Mary E (Elizabeth mn Crowther) is 27
    Sarah E Firth is 7
    Charles 3
    Walter 1
    Jane 1 month

    plus Elizabeth's siblings

    Susannah Crowther 15
Lily Crowther 13 - is married and living in Bradford in 1891.
    William Crowther 7

With that lot I was sure I would find them in 1891 or 1901 but so far can't see them.

    Anyone got better eyes please

Thanks for looking - thought it was just me not looking properly.

Thing is a Samuel Firth is a witness at the wedding of Lily Crowther's daughter in 1921 and I wondered whether it was this Samuel Firth or another relative. Oh well time will tell no doubt.

Wonder if this could be Mary Elizabeth visiting a Proctor family in Durham? Says she's married and born Bradford, she has a 2 year old Samuel with her.

Found them in 1891, the page seems to be missing from Ancestry, it goes from 1 to 3 and they're on page 2.

                Samuel, 38, Professional Musician.
                Mary Elizabeth, 37
                Sarah Ellen, 17, Weaver
                Charles, 13
                Walter, 11
                All born Bradford.

Thanks everso Fiona - I'll try and tie that in with the 1881 census.

Wonder if Walter changed his name?

Don't think Walter changed his name, the Walter Proctor Mary Elizabeth is visiting with in 1901 is 41 a bit old to be her son.

There is a marriage in 1884 Bradford for a Walter Proctor and there is a Martha Crowther on the same page.

                      Mary Elizabeth's sister perhaps?

Yes, looks like it is her sister, here they are in 1861.

There is also a sister Sarah Crowther.

                          Thanks Fiona

You have been busy - I would never have found them especially as info was missing on ancestry. I hadn't got as far as the 1911 with this line.

Yes there are loads of Crowthers - father married twice and the children of the first marriage seem to have been off-loaded onto their siblings.

Would never have thought Samuel Firth was a professional musician - wonder what he played.

It's either him or his son that became a funeral director!!!!

                          Thanks again

I have some west yorkshire Firths in my tree, Mary Firth married Samuel Elsworth, Calverley 1855, Father Jesse born 1794, Morley also Mary's brother William Henry born Paddock Yorkshire 1832. Mary and Sam met in Pudsey but went back to Morley.
