  • Does anyone live in Hartlepool?

    Hello everyone

    Have found this

Article date: April 24, 2007 Hartlepool Mail (Hartlepool, England)
A DISTINGUISHED Service Cross once awarded to a Hartlepool sea captain is to be sold at auction in the United States.
And family members of the First World War hero who received the honour are hoping to club together to buy the medal.
Captain Samuel Beach Ward was skipper of a Royal Navy minesweeper that operated off the coast of Hartlepool during the First World War.
He was responsible for protecting the town's fishing fleet from mines and became something of a local hero during the conflict.
In August 1917 Capt Ward was presented with the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) by King George V for "services in minesweeping operations" during 1916 and 1917.

Haven't come up with much except found him listed in the London Gazette and wondered if someone could point me in the right direction locally. We have contacted the library but have heard nothing as yet. He was born in Scarborough and was killed on one of his trips to/from there as he used to visit family on his motorbike, although then we think he was living in Grimsby. We think this is him taken from a postcard

Any help would be appreciated as I have googled all I can think of!

I think I would try asking on the Great War Forum, I am pretty certain they have some members in Hartlepool, I'm sure someone could point you in the right direction.

Just wanted to let you know what I was given on the war forum,

                    WARD Samuel B 1369WSA Skipper RNR 84Q048
H.M.T. St Leonards 11 Rear Admiral East Coast
                    02.07.17 Gazetted
                    Minesweeping Operations 01.07.16 - 31.03.17 DSC
In August, 1916, when clearing a minefield, he displayed great coolness and skilful seamanship in extracting his ship from a very dangerous position, one mine a few feet from the quarter of his vessel and two other mines in close proximity on either bow.

Am overwhelmed after reading it, can't ever imagine what it would have been like
