Kathlyn, can you post up the details, please, as it's hard to know what the explanation might be without looking at the entry.

Hi Kiterunner,
Here are the details:-
Thomas Owen, married 10th Sept 1878, Kirkby, Lancs.
Wife was Ellen Mawdsley
Father of Thomas was Thomas Tinsley

Have you found Thomas and Ellen together on a census - if so what is Thomas year and place of birth?
I'm a bit confused - you say you've found a birth on the IGI, but it is a marriage, isn't it? The marriage entry is an "extracted" record, so it looks as though the details are taken from the marriage certificate. It says that the name of Thomas Owen's father is Thomas Tinsley. Of course, if you want to be sure then you could order a copy of the marriage certificate from the GRO or Lancashire BMD to check if that is what it says. Most likely explanation is that either Thomas Owen was "illegitimate" and Owen was his mother's surname but Thomas Tinsley was his father, or that Thomas Tinsley was his stepfather.

Checking on Lancashire BMD, they list the marriage as taking place at Kirkby, St Chad's, and Thomas is listed under both surnames - Owen and Tinsley, so I think it is safe to assume that the IGI entry has been correctly transcribed, at least.

And there is a marriage between Thomas Tinsley and Mary Owen in 1848, at Prescot St Mary's, so that could be connected?

Hi Elaine,
I have found Thomas Owen and Ellen together on the 1881 and 1891 census, but I cannot locate them on the 1901
Thomas gives his place of birth as:- Simonswood on the 1881 census, but on the 1891 it is recorded as Rainford. Both places in Lancashire.
I must apologize if it appears that I am a bit of a dipstick, but this side of my family have been nothing but one big headache from my granddad backwards. I am searching totally in the dark and having to "assume" things in the hope that I might hit the target.

I presume the 1881 census you have found is this one
RG11; Piece: 3689; Folio: 23; Page: 2
Thomas Owen born 1848 Simonswood
Ellen Owen born 1838 Kirby
Martha Alice Heyes born 1867 Simonswood
What concerns me about this one is that I can trace a Thomas Owen, born 1848 Simonswood, back to the 1851 census, with parents Clarisa and Isaac.
The Tinsley/Owen marriage that Kite has found seems more appropriate - but doesn't fit in with anything I can find on the census for a Thomas Owen born Simonswood.
What do you know about Ellen - year of birth / place of birth / parents?
