  • Births at Sea?

My neighbour is looking for a couple of dates for ancestors born at sea between Liverpool and Durban (SA) in the 1850's.

The father was Master Mariner (Captain?) Thomas Goble Chapman, and presumably took his family on these trips.

Would the births be registered in Liverpool (where the ship was presumably registered) or Durban?

I've suggested she contact the National Maritime Museum and the Liverpool records office, but any other suggestions most welcome

There is a Births at Sea index on Findmypast covering the years 1854-1887.
Do you have the names she is looking for?

Just had a look at Marine Births between 1850-60 and couldn't see any for Chapman.

There's a Mary Olivia CHAPMAN registered 1855 in Salford (Regent Road sub-district)

Unfortunately, those haven't got the MMN yet.

            Christine

PS - It's probably a match for the registration in the Dec Quarter - slightly late for mid-Aug, but not impossible.
PPS - She's probably the daughter of James and Ann: RG9/2915fo 40 p 41, so not the right one - but could be related, since they've gone for amore unusual name-combination.

              1854 - 1858 database - no result
              1858 - 1865 database - two shows

female child born 6 Oct 1863 - mother Mary Chapman
female child born 8 March 1858 - parents Andrew and Margaret Chapman

There is no index for the pre 1854 period

                            This made me larff (Ancestry)

Think this is supposed to be Elfreda Potter Partridge and her parents. The marriage for her to Thomas Chapman is submitted on the IGI, but I expect you've seen that!

Have printed up the census and my neighbour is thrilled and well impressed by the kind people on here

                                Thanks again!

I should have gone for the (obvious) first step of looking at the census rather than believing her family legend!

Just goes to show doesn't it?

The first thing I did was to put the name "Goble Chapman" into Ancestry which gave me Walter's birth reg and led me to that census image

Thanks for that. I am the neighbour, and I've got very enthused about this. It was amazing to see they'd had Mary Olivia Chapman at sea, as a first child, when Elfreda the mother was 19 years old. They had their next in Liverpool, but the third, Olivier George Chapman born at sea, was registered in Batavia Java. Any ideas how I can find out the name of the ship?
