If you get that marriage certificate then it should tell you the name and occupation of Andrew's father and you can work back from there. It doesn't look as though he was an Archibald after all!

I had thought that that Medway birth might appear as a Baptism in the Garrison Church Register for Brompton on Medway CityArk
    see Cityark - Home
but I surmise that the Rennies were dissenters of some kind, so wouldn't willingly have opted for CofE Bpatism?

I looked at these images for Brompton_Garrison_Church_1847_1998/NP153D_01B_05

Christine, thank you for the interest in this matter.

KiteRunner, thank you i am going to order that marriage cetificate.

I would like to find a living decendant. I understand there are rules on this but does anyone have an idea how I would be able to find one?

Follow them forwards through the GRO indexes looking for a marriage, then when you've found a marriage, look for births of children with matching surname and mother's maiden name, then look for marriages of those children and so on - when you have some names of people who could still be alive, search the electoral roll at Search for People, Businesses and Maps - 192.com to find out their addresses.

Or, if you would rather be sure to find someone who is interested in this whole family tree thing, go onto sites such as Genes Reunited, Ancestry, findmypast, Tribal Pages, etc where members can upload their trees, and search for the names that you know of to see who has them in their tree and keep contacting anybody with matching names - you will eventually find a direct descendant of whoever it was - well, assuming they have living descendants who are interested in family trees, of course.

I'd hoped that the marriage might be on the CityArk site but could spot it. I did have a look in teh old parish church records for the June 1892 quarter, but couldn't see it, even tho' there were other marriages for military personnel.

Brompton, Chatham Garrison Church (the Garrison Church of St. Barbara), Maxwell Road, Brompton baptisms 1847-1977 and marriages 1933-1955 (NP153D)
    Cityark - Search Results
Records of Brompton Garrison Church 1847-1998

    MF/PROJ22/1998-1999: MFs 444-451

Some records of Brompton Garrison Church remain at the church and constitute a class of Public Records that is not eligible for deposit at this office. Other records have been transferred to the chaplain general's department. Persons wishing to inspect the original records should make arrangements with the Chaplain to the Forces, Old Vicarage, Maxwell Road, Brompton, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 5SG (01634) 822441.

This church is the Corps Church of the Royal Engineers (RE) but serves other service units in the area. Contained within the church is the Naval Memorial Chapel. The entries in the naval rolls of honour kept in the chapel relate to the inscriptions on the Royal Navy Chatham Division memorial on the Great Lines in Gillingham and printed copies are available without formality in the local studies collections at this centre (for further information please contact local.studies@medway.gov.uk).

It is recommended that visitors to the church tender a donation to the chaplain for charitable use.
The church was undedicated until 2002 when it was dedicated to St. Barbara, patron saint of artillerymen and engineers. (their Official Garrison Church web site link is out of date). The list following is of microfilm copies of the original records only.

There are various sites which have the GRO indexes on - first of all,
    FreeBMD Home Page
It's free and indexed by name, but only goes up to about the 1920's at the moment. So for any after where FreeBMD runs out, you will need to use one of the following:

First have a look to see if the area / county you are looking for has its own free site (most are not complete yet, though):
UKBMD - Births, Marriages, Deaths Indexes & Census transcriptions for the UK, On-Line

If not then you will have to use a pay site:
Genealogy and Family History Records - Ancestry.co.uk

findmypast.com: welcome back | build your family tree and store your family history photos

    https://www.familyrelatives.com/

For the period up to 1983, you have to search through quarter by quarter as there is no full name index (yet) - they are only indexed by first and last name on the page. From 1984 onwards there is a fully computerised name index on each of those sites.

Thank you for all the great information. I appreciate all the help. It seems this task is a little overwhelming but that will make the results that much more

Thank you. I’m waiting on the marriage certificate for Rennie/McGann and death certificate for Archibald Andrew Rennie.
Margaret Sophia Rennie b1882 Dover Kent. It is believed Margaret became a nun.
1901 census she is 18 single living at home. Civil Parish Erith, Ecclesiastical Parish All Saints, Urban District Erith, Parliamentary Borough Dartford, Village Belvedere. If this is true would anyone know the Catholic Churches in the area and would they have any references?

Not all nuns are Roman Catholic, tho' being Roman Catholic would explain their non-appearance in CofE parish registers.

You also run up against the problem that nuns sometimes change their names when they take their vows. On the other hand, they may use their secular names for death registration.
