can anyone tell me what the letter "p" in the left hand margin of christening records means
It depends on the period. It can mean private, for privately (ie at home) baptised.
Or it can mean pauper - in the period when taxes were collected on baptisms and the vicar had to justify handing over less money. Paupers were exempt.
