Hello Christine. I logged onto your thread today. and found that if I clicked onto the Cheshire MBD. it took me straight to the page.
I am new to this Family research. So that was a big help. I have a question, If you type in the name of person and name of Mother
If that name comes up with details. Does that mean you have found the one you are looking for with the correct Maiden Name of Mother
or is it just the name of the person who corresponds with the date and place of Birth you have typed in.?
I would be pleased, if you could enlighten me on this.
    Thank you Tipples

I'm very pleased to know that you have found this helpful. If you visit the actual UKBMD site (http://www.ukbmd.org.uk) it has any number of useful links for BMD/census web pages/sites, and all very well organised. And there's a sister site for directories and lists.

I haven't used the MMN facility for a while, but my recollection is that putting in the MMN will exclude ones that don't match at all, but won't exclude any that might match, but for which the MMN hasn't been transcribed yet. Having said that, it's often been found that the local BMD offices are much more helpful and flexible about checking points. That means that you could send off for a cert which looks promising, and specify that MMN= Bloggs, and they may not charge you at all if the reference number pulls up a non-matching record. Furthermore, if you specify that father's given name has to be William, GRO won't send any with the name Bill or Willie, because that's not an exact match, but the local offices usually will do so.

You will need to remember that the GRO references only work for the GRO, and are meaningless to the local offices, which have their own reference numbers. But it may be helpful if you can give the year/quarter info which the GRO index gives.
