Just a quick question am I right in thinking to get that on this laptop I have to insert the disc then synch it with my pc somehow?

You can install FTM2014 on more than one machine - but the sync feature works between one machine and Ancestry. I don't think you can sync between a desktop and a laptop automatically other than by transferring the files between the machines yourself yourself, or by storing the files on a shared drive that both access separately.
