  • iMac problem

    I have 2 iMacs.
My current one is almost 4 years old and after the start up chime, I'm getting a grey screen (with the logo). In other words, it's not working.

Tried my old one (2006) and that's not connecting either.
It was fine last time I used it, which was probably last year.

It seems very odd that both of them have a problem.

Followed some online instructions (disconnecting the peripherals etc.) and ended up trying 'reset NVRAM' on my current one.

No luck ... any idea ?

    thanks

When that happened to Katie's iMac (circa2009) we did this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761 - you need ten fingers on each hand. :D

Update: looks like you did that.

      Hi Caroline
Yep dunnit ... spoken with an Apple place and eventually got the phone number of a repair shop just near me.
The problem now is getting it to them !!!

It's darned heavy and I don't have transport. They charge over £100 to collect !!!

        OK
Friend is coming over any minute to take us to the Apple shop.
Blimey ... it opened a few months ago (used to repair TVs and stuff) and I didn't know it had changed hands.

Hopefully, all my pics and videos are recoverable and I won't go to jail

Well all the pics are OK but I just can NOT get Photoshop to install
                  I get 'Configuration Error 15'

Tried everything suggested on the Adobe site .. they won't talk on the phone.

I wrote to them but have had no reply.
Just found a shop that does repairs and they say they can get my Photoshop installed ... but I'm concerned about letting them have my iMac.
Will they have access to all my personal stuff ?

Well yes they would but you have to decide if you trust that particular business. If they are a successful, busy outfit then they would have no time or inclination to be looking at your persoal stuff. Do back everything up though just in case of unforseen accidents.

I don't know how to back up anything. I do have an external hard drive but my OH didn't tell me what to do with it.

The repair shop is unknown to me.

I don't know much about Macs, I must admit. However if you have an external hard drive you could just copy all your documents and photos onto it. With my PC I just copy by dragging and dropping. You can get dedicated backup programs but I prefer to see exactly what's happening, which is why I 'do it myself'. You should really make a habit of copying your stuff onto the external hard drive on a regular basis so if anything happens you don't loose anything.

The external hard drive probably connects to your computer with a USB cable? I assume if you plug it in to the computer it will bring up its own window (do Macs have windows???). Hopefully someone with more knowledge of Macs will come to your aid if my suggestion is rubbish!

Can you ask around your friends about a repair shop? Well established, local repair places are usually OK but it would put your mind at rest if someone you know had used it.

I have managed to contact one of my late husband's colleagues and he says he'll have a hunt on the internet and ring me.
He's a Graphic Designer and they all use photoshop

Reply from a guy on the Adobe forum

You would be better writing to the Pope and ask him to perform a miracle, you will get a quicker response. Adobe don't care about their users unless you are upgrading to the Cloud. I have tried updates, downloads, reinstalling, Java etc. The "GOOD NEWS" now is it takes 25 Minutes to open CS5..........

                                UPDATE

Gave up trying and have bought a 2nd hand iMac. This has an older OS and my friend says he can put photoshop on it for me.

Having never had a good word to say about Macs, he is fast becoming besotted !
