    I am nowhere near retirement but have this interest. It can be very time consuming, an older cousin who is also interested in finding out about my family said "I don't know how you find the time" and he'd rather spend time on other things. Thing is, I have MS (not from the point of view of "woe is me", my attitude is suck it up and try and enjoy life) which is a bit restrictive when it comes to movement, therefore family history is an interest that can fill your time, rather than daydreaming.
