  • Irish Military Pension Records on line

    From the WDYTYA Magazine site:

More than 300,000 Irish military pension records from the Easter Rising and War of Independence will go online tomorrow (Friday 17 January).

The old Irish Republican Army (IRA) pension was received by 60,000 individuals who served in the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army, the IRA, Cumann na mBan, the National Army/Defence Forces and other organisations from April 1916 to September 1923.

The records will be free to view on the Military Archives website – militaryarchives.ie – and include applications from the pensioners and/or their dependents to request a gratuity, statements from commanding officers on why each person merited a pension, along with maps, drawings and diagrams.

“People don’t realise what’s in store here,” Irish Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan told The Irish Times. “This is contemporary history and it’s very important.”

They will be launched at the General Post Office in Dublin, where the uprising leaders’ headquarters were in 1916.
