  • and now my other grandad,WW1 records

Hi...on Wednesday I asked whether any records could be found as to my Grandad Oakes being in WW1...we came up with some fascinating results...now I want to find out if my other grandad was in WW1.
    this might be tricky though...
he was born in Welshpool in 1899 as Reginald Percival Roberts.
    he married as Percival Anson..
all I have been told was that my g grandmother changed the kids names to Anson because her husband,Mathew Roberts b 1861 Welshpool left her and moved in ACROSS THE STREET to live with another woman....where the name Anson came from ,we don`t know...so we are looking for either
    Reginald Percival Roberts b 1899 Welshpool....or
    Percival Anson b 1899 Welshpool.......regards...allan

    Hi Alan,

Do you have his birth cert? There isn't a matching birth in 1899 - this is the best match I can find:

    Births Dec 1897
Roberts Reginald Percy Forden 11b 160

Welshpool was in the Forden registration district.

In the 1901 census Martha Roberts, sister-in-law, tailoress and Reginald P Roberts, nephew, aged 3, born Welshpool, are living in Astley, Shropshire with William H Williams and his children Minnie and Frederick.

Does that sound like your Reginald?

yes ..you are correct...Martha Adams was from Astley...she was b in 1863 and died in 1959 age 96..I was 8...she was my g grandmother...I have been to Astley a couple of times its a tiny village...she was one of 13...she married Mathew Roberts.....Reginald Percival Roberts/Percival Anson was their son ...I was led to believe he was born in 1899,but obviously it was 1897...cheers...allan

Mary....Its only just come to me but...I don`t know whether Martha was registered on her death certificate as Martha Roberts/Martha Anson or Martha Adams....I was about 8 when she died...but I could have been a little younger..so she died about 1957-8-9...allan

This looks like her sister's marriage to William Williams:

              Marriages Jun 1896
              ADAMS Edith / Atcham 6a 1335
              Williams William Henry / Atcham 6a 1335

              I also found this marriage:

              Marriages Jun 1925
              Anson Edith / Williams / Ecclesall B. 9c 928a
              Williams Reginald A R / Anson / Ecclesall B. 9c 928a

It may be just a coincidence, though, because I can't find a marriage between Edith Adams and an Anson.

The parents of Martha and Edith seem to be William Adams and Sarah ?, but there's no William Adams to Sarah Anson marriage, so that's not where the name comes from.

There's no obvious entry under Reginald P Anson in the service records on Ancestry, and they only go up to the surname N so far. There are one or two possibles among the medal cards, but they contain so little detail it's impossible to be sure which, if any is your grandfather. Did he survive the war? Do you know if he served in the Welsh regiment?

Which year did he get married?

I wondered where Martha's sister Edith was in 1901, because she wasn't with her husband. Just found her as a patient in Salop infirmary.

My mum was the 6th child (they had 10)and she was born in 1927..I know my auntie elsie was born in 1920 and she was the 2nd born...so I can only presume Martha Anson ,the eldest child was born about 1917-1919...possibly earlier...so the marriage ,which I presume was in Garston, was between Percival Anson and Martha Ellis she was b 20-08-1898....cheers...allan
added...just checked family tree...Edith Adams was born 30/12/1876....so she was only 24 at the time of the census..allan
ADDED...Martha A Ellis/Percy Anson marriage at St Michaels church Garston 1917 ref num 2072/WD/4/383..so if he was Percy Anson in 1917 I presume he was Percy Anson if he signed up for WW1...he was a crane driver on Garston Docks,so maybe his job was important enough for him to stay back home??..allan

There was a Percy Anson with the Liverpool Regiment, but there's no service record online for him.

He was discharged on medical grounds in 1915, but there doesn't seem to be a pension file for him online.

If you go to FreeBMD and enter Anson as the surname and Ellis as the mother's maiden name, and nothing else, you'll get the names and years of birth of all the children.
